qotd: what do you think about hyphened surnames after marriage?

lenard (11:17:24 AM): i think they are fine
lenard (11:17:31 AM): lets the girl keep her name
lenard (11:17:50 AM): women get a bumdeal on their names

arex (11:18:04 AM): like Boo-Boo-Kitty-Fuck ?
arex(11:18:07 AM): i think they’re hawt
vee (11:18:48 AM): neg\
arex (11:19:23 AM): oh like hippies naming their kids?
vee (11:19:34 AM): kinda
vee (11:19:36 AM): hippies getting married
vee (11:19:37 AM): more like
arex (11:19:57 AM): well i just think they need to think about the future
arex (11:20:14 AM): cause their kid’s kid better not be Tommy Chunn-Bennett-Hua-Marsch
arex (11:20:16 AM): you know?
arex (11:20:54 AM): like how do two people whos parents hyphenated the family name get married themselves?
vee (11:21:12 AM): i dont know
vee (11:21:16 AM): thats a good quesiton
vee (11:21:17 AM): haha but people in spanish speaking countries do it dont they
vee (11:21:33 AM): its not a big deal?
arex (11:21:58 AM): they dont hyphenate
arex (11:21:59 AM): they list
arex (11:22:28 AM): like my mother is Montserrat Mercader Ortiz Azuthena ____ ____ ___
arex (11:22:42 AM): actually i dont think she is mercader anymore
arex (11:22:48 AM): i think she loses that name
arex (11:22:55 AM): the one she loses is the one i get in tradition.. i think..
vee (11:22:59 AM): thats fine
vee (11:23:01 AM): maybe they can list
vee (11:23:16 AM): i mean listing is also a possibilty
vee(11:23:18 AM): i jsut said hyphen!
arex (11:23:20 AM): i think children should take one name
arex (11:23:37 AM): and the other as their middle
arex (11:23:48 AM): and the only way a child’s last name should get hyphenated is if the parents remarry
vee (11:23:49 AM): that wuold be interesting
arex (11:23:57 AM): then i thikn the tradition should be they keep their mother’s last name as their middle
vee (11:24:01 AM): thatd be so confusing
arex (11:24:09 AM): and then their father’s last name hyphenates to the new wife’s last name

vee (11:19:24 AM): what do you think about hyphened last names (after marriage, if the girl wants to keep her name in part of the last name)
pwny (11:20:07 AM): jayna has it. she’s pert cool
pwny (11:20:42 AM): i would point out that mr. smith does not have her name added to his though
vee (11:20:58 AM): h00 is jayna
pwny (11:21:05 AM): jayna picket-smith
pwny (11:21:08 AM): will smith’s wife
pwny (11:21:22 AM): she is also an actress
vee (11:21:38 AM): wtf
vee (11:21:42 AM): her name is jayda
vee (11:21:44 AM): pinkette
pwny (11:21:49 AM): oh
pwny (11:21:50 AM): well
vee (11:21:50 AM): i should beat u with a trout
pwny (11:22:02 AM): lol….
pwny (11:22:08 AM): that is oldschool. man
pwny (11:22:37 AM): anyways, yes. JAYDA has much names
pwny (11:23:10 AM): you want to call keepsies on your name?
vee (11:23:29 AM): shrug, possibly
vee (11:23:38 AM): i think some hyphen combos sound rad
pwny (11:23:43 AM): yes.
pwny (11:24:21 AM): name’s/lineage is perty important to some chinese people righto?
pwny (11:24:30 AM): movies taught me that
vee (11:25:15 AM): HAHA
vee (11:25:19 AM): yea i guess so!
vee (11:25:23 AM): moreso if ur a man, tho
pwny (11:25:27 AM): yeah
vee (11:25:30 AM): but yea when chinese people marry
veeeeeveeeee (11:25:34 AM): they still keep their own original name
pwny (11:25:40 AM): coolies
pwny (11:26:02 AM): now you just have to make sure that whoever you marry has a good name to merge w/ yours!
pwny (11:26:08 AM): another criteria
vee (11:26:51 AM): tis true
pwny (11:27:24 AM): you wouldn’t want to be like…hua-van der vaart
vee (11:27:42 AM): I WOULD
vee (11:27:43 AM): actually
vee (11:27:47 AM): van der vaart hua
vee (11:27:49 AM): dude thats pimp
pwny (11:27:50 AM): haha, yeah i realized it was cool after i typed it
pwny (11:28:05 AM): he’s a pro footballer
pwny (11:28:07 AM): easy catch
pwny (11:28:11 AM): dutch

jah (11:19:38 AM): i think it is fine
jah (11:19:49 AM): sometimes u dont even need to hyphenate !
jah (11:19:51 AM): just have both

liz (1:32:24 PM): i’m ok w/it
liz (1:33:17 PM): well i wouldn’t hyphenate my last name
liz (1:33:22 PM): but i know what you’re saying
vee (1:33:24 PM): rgr rgr
liz (1:33:31 PM): why are you getting married?!

twince (12:17:20 PM): you know when Jenny Mcnielson-Anderson marries Thomas Jordan-Deangelo, their kids are going to really hate writing their name
twince (12:20:52 PM): anyway, i’d be fine with my kids having the mother’s last name
vee (12:21:08 PM): nice
vee (12:21:17 PM): whys that
twince (12:21:50 PM): because if that’s what she wants in the pre-nup, that’s one less thing she gets in the deal
twince (12:22:00 PM): zing!
twince (12:22:29 PM): no seriously, because if it means that much to her, then sure, go for it

aberOo (1:34:09 PM): don’t be a high maintenance biatch
aberOo (1:34:12 PM): change the damned thing
aberOo (1:34:20 PM): unless the hyphenated name sounds cooler
aberOo (1:34:21 PM): haha
vee (1:34:21 PM): rofls
vee (1:34:33 PM): sometimes it does sound cool
aberOo (1:34:38 PM): gimme example
vee (1:34:44 PM): there’s this chick named
vee (1:34:48 PM): pavlina honcova-summers
vee (1:34:49 PM): i like it
aberOo (1:34:57 PM): what a tragic name
vee (1:35:02 PM): what
vee (1:35:03 PM): i <3
aberOo (1:39:57 PM): thats because you’re weird and quirky

sorry gheppy, i didn’t immediately post ur answer and i lost it >_> plz respond!

soulmates and fate… do you believe?

today mee, sherry, and jeanette somehow got into talking about soulmates. they both thought that there is one soulmate for every person. i guess i used to think that also, but now i’m not too sure. hum, how UNhopelessly romantic, eh? well either way, there are people who think soulmates don’t have to be ROMANTIC soulmates… just ordinary people. if anything, i agree with that more. but who knows… maybe i just haven’t met mine [maybe i will never...?]

the thing is… how do yoo kno if someone really is your soulmate? just because yoo click with that person doesn’t mean he’s your soulmate. sherry and jeanette said it was someone that makes yoo go like, “wow, i’ve never been so happy.” but how do yoo kno that? maybe tomorrow yoo will find another guy that makes yoo even happier…

and the other thing is fate. i definitely definitely do not believe in fate. that’s kind of the fundamentals of christianity, so maybe that’s one of the reasons christianity no longer appeals to mee. either way, i think fate is what you make of it. what is that? existentialism or something? who knows. either way, i dun believe in a pre-planned fate, and i think your fate you can change with the decisions you make. so maybe there are soulmates. and if someone doesn’t meet his soulmate, that’s not because he was FATED not to. cuz in that case, he just got screwed. i think it is more that maybe he isn’t trying hard enough or there is something about his personality that he just has to change. who knows?

let’s keep a running tally…
people who believe in soulmates — 3
people who are not sure if they believe in soulmates — 2
people who don’t believe in soulmates — 2
people who believe in fate — 4
people who are not sure if they believe in fate — 1
people who don’t believe in fate — 2

(diana’s response:)

the aristophanic theory of “soul mates” [which my soul mate would know about >;D] is that in the beginning, we were one androgynous being. we were both male & female [and in some cases male & male... to make room for the homoeroticism that was open & accepted back in the good ol' days. but then again, it was sexist homoeroticism. if there could be male & male, there should also be female & female!! equal-opportunity homoeroticism, goddammit!!! >P].

the gods split us into separate beings, and it is our cruel fate to search the world looking for our “other half”. sex is supposed to give us temporary relief from the awareness that we are MUTILATED and INCOMPLETE [if we were "whole", then we'd feel the way we feel @ the peak of orgasm all the time]. according to aristophanes [but in actuality, plato. it's called an aristophanic theory but it was plato's and attributed to aristophanes], we’re these poor, pitiful halves on a neverending search for our other half.

…useless information. that’s what i’m good for. =P

ermf. i must clarify: there WERE female & female beings [there were male & male, female & female, male & female]… except they were easily dismissed by aristophanes. the people cut from the male & male being… who became homosexual men… were the most highly regarded by aristophanes. so it’s still biased. >P to be cut from the male & male was the best… and then the male & female… and then the female & female. >P

the strangest thing about the theory is the fact that while we were “complete”, we were these round things who rolled around with 4 arms & 4 legs [along with 2 sets of everything else]. o_O scary.

all in all, the aristophanic theory is about love — or desire in general — being nothing more than desire for ONE particular person. there’s only one particular person [the one who was cut from the same round being as you] who can complete you.
