hyperbolic.

quick post.
practice of the brain.
long time no write.
hoi an, vietnam am in.
best city of vietnam so far.
(which still isn’t as good as either city in cambodia.)

only 5 more days left.
lots of journaling to do.
not that many photographs to chronicle, actually, though.
got a bit tired of photographing.
only taking it when it counts.
only when inspired.
no bullshit.
anyway, there’s not that much to take pictures of, anyway.
even my angkor wat album is fairly slim.
was also limited to 8gb of memory card space.
which is a lot when you’re not shooting in raw.
but i started out shooting in raw.
gonna go back to it, maybe.
seems i don’t really need the space.
yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh dawg.

drifting.

I’m listening to… Hotel Eden, Infected Mushroom.

It’s hard to update these days. Just kinda drifting through life these days. :P Updates in life include the following.

The awesome guitar player from The Horrors.

* Cliff wants me to be his art manager. TBD what that entails.

* I went to Sohaila and Joe Vollan’s art openings on Friday… I really liked Sohaila’s new stuff.

* I’ve come up with a tattoo design and am now pondering whether I want to spend money on such things, or if I want to spend money on traveling… always more inclined to lean towards traveling, but you know how it is.

* Left4Dead has been quite different and people don’t usually want to play much anymore.

* New roommate is well, quite different from most people I have associated with since I’ve been to college… and he reminds me very much of my brother at a younger age, with the desire for money, women, and well, not drugs, but still. He is also very… young… in his approach to life and approach to women. Hopefully being in Seattle will help he be less naive? Last week, I took him to an art walk, and there was a DJ man dressed up in drag, and Mike (roommate) was like, “What’s up with that guy?” and I said, “Wow, I understand, but if you said that to anyone else, that would be HIGHLY offensive,” and he didn’t see how it could be offensive. Just interesting.

* Went to see the Horrors and the Kills at Neumo’s on Friday evening, cept Rachel got sick and went to sleep in the car, so I left the Kills early, which is too bad, cause they fucking kicked ass. The Horrors really kicked ass, too. I got a couple pics below of the Horrors. They’re a good looking bunch of lads, and man, can the fucking guitarist play some mean ass shit, for reals. Lots of effect pedals and such, but totally fucking kick ass. I HIGHLY recommend that you go check them out.

* Parents came on Saturday, but I already wrote about that below.

* Swapping between reading Haruki Murakami’s After The Quake, a whole book of Lewis Caroll’s writings (just finished Alice in Wonderland… now onto Through The Looking Glass), and World War Z. All amazing books… all very different… but all separated in small enough segments that I can digest all three at once without much conflict in my brain (or is there)?

* Chris has been having people over for Dungeons and Dragons parties. The game is actually kind of badass, although I don’t personally think I can play because that shit takes so godamn long.

* Chris made an interesting dinner tonight for all the D&D folks, which consisted of Cream of Chicken, Cream of Mushroom, tortillas, green chili, corn… actually really fucking good, although I can’t say it seems all that healthy. :P

* Me, Chris, and Mahoca watched “Bill And Ted’s Excellent Adventure” yesterday, and I must say, it was fucking excellent. Stupid, but excellent.

* Oh yes, I’m pretty committed and determined to going to Burning Man this year; I’ve already purchased my tickets to Los Angeles and will definitely make it happen one way or another. Going to apply for low-income tickets… with the deadline being May 30, so I gotta do it tomorrow… because I’m low-income, right now, dammit. :|

* Infected Mushroom is coming July 3rd, and I am actually using Google Calendar to make fucking damn sure that I don’t miss it this time, since I’ve already missed them a couple times due to absolutely freakish circumstances beyond my control. And so it goes.

* Got caught up on some “Breaking Bad” with Lenny, finally, but we’re still a good five weeks behind. EEEP. That shit is SO GOOD.

* I also like this stupid reality dating show called “Daisy of Love.” Stupidly named, but it’s interesting. Mostly because I like seeing the people that go on the show and how their personalities are. I love reality TV. Not gonna lie. Granted that perhaps much of it IS fabricated, but it’s only fabricated to a degree. People are just so damn interesting.

* I met with one of my new writers, Chris, yesterday, who is a friend of Yair and Hojo’s… so that was cool. We sat in front and in back of each other for a good fifteen minutes, not knowing the other person was the other person (but suspecting).

* Got to try Trophy Cupcakes, which Tammy claimed was much tastier than Cupcake Royale. I’m not quite sure that it was, but it was good, true. That shit is expensive, though, them designer cupcakes. How can they charge that much money for a snagnam cupcake?!!!!

Alright, enough ranting. It’s time to do some more reading and go to bed.

getting caught in a singing fest.

Earlier today, I had to drop Jody off in Bellingham because the train tickets were sold out and he needed to catch a ferry to Petersburg, Alaska.

When the train tickets were sold out yesterday, he came upstairs and asked, “Hey Vivian! Want to partake in an adventure tomorrow?”

Thinking I only had this one little focus group test thing (optional, no money either), I said okay. I forgot actually that I was supposed to go to this 3:00pm show as well. OoPz. The deal was gas money and lunch… of the sushi variety. Wasabee Sushi, in fact.

So we drove up to Bellingham and got there at around 11:45am and then waited for his girlfriend’s mom to show up. Ate with her, and she was a nice / fun-ish lady. She ended up paying for lunch, and Jody just paid for tip. SCORE! :P Then she took him around for grocery shopping and I left to go explore Bellingham. It was alright.

I did enjoy, however, rocking the fuck out on my drive home, to Chico Fellini — to the song that’s on this front page, in fact. As you can hear, if you click on their name there, the song is fucking intense. HAHA. Usually I’m pretty wary about rocking out in traffic because people can see you and shit, but for today, I had just woken up from a half hour nap I’d taken at the rest stop and didn’t really give that much of a fuck and wasn’t that much “all there”. So I was rocking the FUCK out, with head bobs and strange vocals, and the part that I finally realized people were watching me was during the song, right after “You make it hard, hard, hard, hard, hard, hard, for me to focus! F-F-F-F-Focus!” in the first verse… lol. ~__~ There was a car full of four dudes watching me, and one of them smiled, and I smiled back, and then proceeded to be embarrassed to shit!!! Of COURSE, my window was open. And so was theirs. And of COURSE, it was during stopped traffic. FUCK!!!

Photos from the Big Rock Park in Bellingham today. There were like four different colors of Japanese maple trees right next to each other, with the sun shining on them. The pictures don’t quite capture it entirely, but it was fucking BEAUTIFUL.

May 13, 2009

photo journey blahblah fuck.

Some fucking photos from a one hour walk around Aurora Ave. yesterday. Fuck. I’m hating myself at the moment. More to come.

February 15, 2009

death valley, day one — sand dunes are the SHIT!

We left the house at 5:30am, and then this was the view at around 6:00am. Matt drove in his ex-Park Ranger Jeep.

We tried to stop by Calico ghost town along the way, but it was a major tourist trap, and it wasn’t even open yet! But it was so touristy you had to pay a $10 entrance fee! WTF!

We drove and then came across this old mine shaft thing or something, and the cool part about this area of the state is that they don’t care where you drive. At all. There are no fencings anywhere. So we decided to try driving up that hill where that mine thing was… but that didn’t work out too well. Ha.

The next stop was at Death Valley Junction, which wasn’t a ghost town, but it might as well have been one, haha.

(Jeanette’s picture.)

Finally, we got to the park. We paid for the daily fee, and then went to pee in an extremely stinky outhouse.

Then… first stop: THE BADLANDS! This is Jeanette and Matt demonstrating that these lands are indeed bad, and need to be punished.

The Badlands are BEAUTIFUL. It’s hard to choose what is the best part of the park, because it’s all so damn cool. This is one of my favorite parts of the park, but they pretty much all are equally awesome.

(Jeanette’s picture.)

(Jeanette’s picture. I LORV IT.)

(Jeanette’s picture.) There was this idea to do symmetrical poses for a while…

Matt doing some crazy jumping, grabbing shit.

(Jeanette’s picture.) Oh yes, symmetrical pose. The best one of all, I’d say.

OH WHAT’S THIS?! WHAT’S THIS?! SUZYOTA IS LIKE TOYOTA AND SUZUKI ALL IN ONE!

They got hungry, so they decided to buy some lunch at the local lunch place. Me? I decided to bring my leftovers from the previous night’s Valentine’s Day dinner, because that was an expensive meal, and bringing it would be my only chance to eat my dill rice and tomato-y dish.

Matt signed Jeanette’s “lame” name.

(Jeanette’s picture.) First, we drove to the campsite. It wasn’t originally the campsite we’d wanted, but it wasn’t the MOST touristy one, either. We set up our tent, which was really freaking amazing and was set-uppable in like ten minutes. RIDONKULOUS!!! I want one of those super tents!

The owner posing with his tent!

When we first got there, we started stacking rocks.

And then!! A ROADRUNNER!!

He’s running!

So we get our tent set up, and then we drive and drive and drive. We pull over so Jeanette can switch with Matt driving, and then Matt does this awesomeness. His last name is Meeks, so it makes sense! Hah!

Then Jeanette starts driving like a grandma.

The first stop was Salt Creek, so we decided to get out, but then it was a really long walk to nowhere, really. So, we didn’t walk all the way before overhearing someone who had just gone there that it wasn’t anything much. So we headed back. But man, there were SO MANY ROCKS! And I picked up two rocks to keep for home, and Jeanette got about a zillion of them haha. I don’t think she ever got them out of Matt’s trunk, where they were put after she picked them up……………….. the walk took FOREVER though because seriously, Jeanette was picking up like every other rock, and there were SO MANY ROCKS! It was so weird that they were all out there, and all different… not sure what geologically caused so many different kinds of rocks to appear in one place…

Next stop: Sand Dunes!

Now, I’d never been to sand dunes before, but damn, they were fun!! We walked and walked and walked and walked up and down hills, up and down… being slightly careful of not getting bitten by scorpions, but not too worried…

There were these interesting clay-like areas that could be lifted up and stacked. Pretty neato.

Stacked!

STACKED!

While climbing up the sand dunes, the sand makes interesting little footstep marks! A lot of the hills hadn’t been treaded on at all, actually.

Pretty layer of black sand, which was notably harder and coarser than the fine sand!

(Jeanette’s picture.) Close-up!

(Jeanette’s picture.) Look at this!

Sand dunes are weird. But awesome.

(Jeanette’s picture.) Mmm, my disgusting feet.

(Jeanette’s picture.) Matt jumping down hills!

(Jeanette’s picture.) This was our end goal: the tallest sand dune. It was so godamn far away, though…

(Jeanette’s picture.) This doesn’t look that tall, but it really is.

(Jeanette’s picture.) We are waking towards the apex!

(Jeanette’s picture.) There was quiiiiite a linnnnne.

So, we got to the highest point, and then ran down. It was pretty fun actually. A lot less scary than I thought it would be, and it was a pretty steep hill. Jeanette was scared at first but got over that too, I thinks.

On our way back, Jeanette is walking like an old woman with a walking stick. The conversation back was quite funny, although I don’t remember details, unfortunately.

Next stop: Mosaic Canyon.

All these stones were marble. SoOo smooth… sOoO amazing. These pictures don’t do it justice WHATSOEVER. It was really nice, and really quiet, and there were barely any other people around. We climbed up, and then I would throw rocks down and hear how they clanked and echoed in the silence. It was awesome, because marble clanks and clacks so very well.

These need some color correction. Godamn.

(Jeanette’s picture.) My superhero picture!!!! BOO-YAH!

(Jeanette’s picture.) The rock’s detail!!!

(Jeanette’s picture.) GROUP PIC!

(Jeanette’s picture.) Matt posing!

(Jeanette’s picture.) Me posing!

When we were done with Mosaic Canyon, it was dark enough, and it was time to head back.

That night, we sat around and made ramen for dinner. Bloorg!

Then it was fun with lights time with Jeanette! We decided she’d write something.

She decided on “love.” “Write it backwards, though,” I said, and she said, “I did,” and then I showed her the picture, and she’s like… ha… (at herself).

Oh, there we go!!!

Then sleep. And blindness and being led around by Jeanette when my contacts were out. :P
